BOILING WATER REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4821336
Boiling water reactors are described whose fuel elements each have two different kinds of surfaces, the surfaces of the first kind being in contact with the boiling water. The steam developed is allowed to pass over the surfaces of the second kind where it is superheated. Suitably, the fuel elements each have a tubular shape and are immersed in the water to be boiled; some of the tubular fuel elements may be open at their upper extremities, which latter extend into the space above the surface ot the boiling liquid so that the steam that accumulates in this space passes down through these tubular fuel elements for superheating. This partially superheated steam then suitably rises through another adjacent fuel element for final superheating, the upper extremities of the latter being connected to a steam-header, situated above the level of the boiling liquid, for collecting the superheated steam.
