EXPLORATORY INVESTIGATION ON THE EFFECT OF URANIUM ADDITIONS TO MAGNESIUM AND SOME MAGNESIUM ALLOYS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4821331
ABS>Uranium was added to magnesium and magnesium alloys containing Al, Zn, Zr, and Mn. It was found that the uranium additions to impure magnesium do not remove the impurities to the level obtained by the vacuum distillation process and, therefore, would not be useful for the refining of electrolytic magnesium. The uranium phase in pure magnesium, which is located predominantly at the grain boundaries, appears to be nonmetallic, and as shown by the pitting in normal metallographic preparations, dissolves readily in water. The addition of uranium to the alloys caused no change in microstructure, grain size, or tensile properties. It appears that the solubility of uranium in magnesium increases with higher zinc content.
