REDUCTION OF URANIUM OXIDE

A method is described for the separation of uranium and magnesium oxide in a zinc alloy medium from the magnesium reduction of uranium oxide. The process involves settling separation of the magnesium oxide and the uranium--zinc intermetallic compound formed in the contacting of uranium oxide with a molten magnesium-zinc mixture. The uranium--zinc compound is then heated to affect distillation of magnesium and zinc from metallic uranium. (R.E.U.)
