RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPE COMBINATION

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4821256
Several radiators consisting of two or more radioisotopes in combination are described for making radiographs of quality comparable to those made with x rays. A compos ite radiator for metal radiography particularly of thick steel, comprises Ir/sup 192/ Sb/sup 124/ Sc/sup 46/ and Ta/sup 182/ - the radiations cover an energy band of 0.25 to 2.0 Mev. The possibility of making composite radiators with radiation curves approaching arbitrarily drawn ideal curves is discussed. A composite radiator comparabIe to Ir/sup 192/ but of extremely long half life and applicable to radiography of materials of a medium thickness, e.g., up to 1.5-inch thickness of steel, comprises 14% Kr65, 84% Ba/sup 133/, and 2% Cs/ sup 137/. A composite radiator having the penetration capacity of Co/sup 60/ but producing radiographs of quality comparable to those made with x rays, comprises 12% Y/sup 88/ 18% Na/sup 22/ and 70% Cs/sup 134/.
