THE EFFECT OF GAMMA-RADIATION ON THE STRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE SPINAL CORD OF THE CHICKEN EMBRYO (in Russian)

In a previous work it was found that by irradiating chicken embryos with gamma -rays the spontaneous and reflex motions are interfered with although the over-all development of the motor functions remains unchanged. Morphological studies carried out at that time are reported. The White Leghorn embryos were irradiated at the age of 1, 4, and 7 days with doses ranging from 600 to 1500 r. The irradiation caused structural and cytochemical changes without interfering with the morphological and physiological differentiation processes of the spinal cord; this might be the reason for the observation that the development of the motor function is not interfered with. The retardation of the reflex and spontaneous motor functions of the irradiated embryos is probably due to structural injury. (TTT)
