The spectrum of electrons scattered at l35 deg from a carbon target is studied as a function of incident electron energy. For several incident energies between 46 and 154 Mev, the elastic peak and the region of the spectrum from 13.5 to 17.5 Mev below the elastic peak are measured. Peaks are observed corresponding to excitatlon of the 15.1and 16.1-Mev levels. The cross sections for these excitations, relative to the elastic peak, are determined to an accuracy of the order of 15%. The cross section for excitation of the 15.1-Mev level falls from 2.6 x 10/sup -32/ cm/ sup 2/ steradian to 0.4 x 10/sup -32/ cm/ sup 2/ steradian as the energy increases from 46 to 100 Mev. The cross section for excitation of the 16.1 Mev level varies little with energy, and is the order of 0.5 x 10/sup -32/ cm/sup 2/ steradian for the energies studied. (auth)
