RESONANCE SCATTERING AT THE 15.1 Mev LEVEL IN 12c

Journal Article ·
OSTI ID:1433959
The broad photon spectrum of the Li7 (p, y) Be8 reaction has been used to excite the 15.1 MeV 1+; 1 level in C12. The integrated scattering cross section of 1.82+- 0.12 MeV * mb has been determined by measuring the resonantly scattered photons and the primary radiation with the same NaI crystal. The peak absorption cross section of 28.9 +- 3.3 barns has been obtained by minimizing the error of the integrated scattering cross section as determined from experiments with scatterers of different thickness. These results combine to give 40.2+- 5.2 eV for the ground state radiation width and 44.7 +- 10.3 eV for the total width of the level. These widths are somewhat lower than previous reported results. The sharp 17.6 MeV radiation of the Li7(p,y) Be8 reaction has also been used to measure elastic scattering cross sections for carbon, aluminium, cadmium and lead of 1.0 +- 1.0 ub, 16.1+- 3.7 ub, 2.2+-0.2 mb and 5.2+-0.5 mb respectively.
