THE RADIATIVE CAPTURE CROSS SECTION OF $sup 236$U FOR NEUTRONS IN THE ENERGY RANGE 0.3 TO 4.0 MEV

Journal Article · · Proc. Phys. Soc. (London)
The cross section of the reaction U/sup 236/ (n, gamma )U/sup 237/ was measured for neutrons in the energy range 0.3 to 4.0 Mev using an activation method. Fission products in the irradiated samples were removed chemically and the U/sup 237/ roduced was determined by counting the gamma activity with a sodium iodide scintillation spectrometer. The cross section was found to increase from about 300 mb at 0.3 to about 400 mb at 1.1 Mev. It then fell sharply to some 30 mb at 4 Meva The shape of the excitation function is typical of that found for other heavy even-even nuclides far from a a closed shell, This is due to the competition between radiative capture and inelastic scattering from the similar collective level structures, (auth)
