A method for conducting a thermonuclear reaction comprises establishing a magnetic containment zone in an evacuated special region, the dimensions of such containment zone being defined by an axially symmetric magnetic field having gradiently intensified magnetic reflector regions spaced along the axis and serving as terminal closures of the said zone, and introducing and accumulating energetic fuel ions in such zone to form a contained plasma with a density sufficient to provide an appreciable thermonuclear fusion reaction rate.
