A gas-cooled, water-moderated reactor is described which has advantages over the heavy water-moderated and light water-moderated reactor types. The moderator consists of 70 to 95 wt % D/sub 2/O and balance H/sub 2/O. In the preferred form of the reactor, the moderator is 90 wt% D/sub 2/O and 10 wt% H/sub 2/O, and the fuel is uranium oxide plates of twicenatural enrichment and canned in beryllium. The moderator to uranium volumetric ratio is 10 to 1, and the reactor is cooled by CO/sub 2/ at 37 atm pressure. (D.L.C.)
