Processing and properties of BSCCO 2212 Ag and Ag alloy multifilament round wires

Ag-sheathed Bi{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}CaCu{sub 2}O{sub x} round wires having 37, 259, and 703 filaments were fabricated by the oxide-powder-in-tube (OPIT) method. The wires were heat treated using step-solidification melt processing in pure O{sub 2}. In addition to pure silver sheaths, wires with Ag-Al and Ag-Zr sheaths were also fabricated. The critical current density (J{sub c}) at 4.2 K, zero field, shows significant improvement in strain tolerance for bending strains up to 1% for dispersion strengthened multifilament 2212 wire designs over wires with pure silver sheaths. The transport critical current density at liquid helium temperature (4.2 K) approached 200,000 A/cm{sup 2} in zero field and 45,000 A/cm{sup 2} at 15 Tesla. At liquid neon temperature (27 K) the J{sub c} was about 75,000 A/cm{sup 2} zero field and dropped rapidly to zero at 10 Tesla.
