THE PRINCIPLES OF THE NUCLEAR RADIATION MEASURING TECHNIQUE

Journal Article · · Feinwerktechnik
OSTI ID:4820539

This part of a series of articles on the principles of radiation measurements deals exclusively with radiation detectors. Types of radiation and ways io differentiate be. tween the radiation, penetrating pewers, and the basic concepts of detector systems are discussed. The statistics governing nuclear decay and the time element of their measurements are explained, and mathematical formulas are presented. The following sections deal with these subjects: ionization chambers (including discussions of dose units and ionization chambers with air or texture walls), proportional counters, Geiger- Muller counters, scintillation counters, and neutron detectors. Each type of apparatus mentioned is illustrated with photographs of instruments manufactured by the firm Frieseke und Hoepfner, Erlangen, West Germany. (OID)
