$pi$-MESON PRODUCTION IN 2.9-Bev p-p COLLISIONS

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
The momentum spectrum of charged pi mesons produced in proton interactions at 2.9 Bev was measured, using counter techniques. Detailed momentum spectra of the pi mesons as a function of the angle are provided. The experiment was performed at Brookhaven's Cosmotron using the external proton beam III and a liquid H/sub 2/ target. The spectra were measured at 0, l7, and 32 deg in the laboratory; the circulating beam intensity ranged from 2 x 10/sup 10/ to 2 x 10/sup 11/ protons/pulse with 30% extraction efficiency to the second focus. A summary of the integrated cross sections is given and comparison is made with results of the bubble chamber Work. Agreement was obtained. The shape of the momentu spectra at various angles, especially 0 deg , provides a crucial test for the most current theories on pi production. (L.N.N.)
