“Self-scintillation” study of the beta decay of Rb87

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics
The beta decay of Rb87 was studied using the seIfscintillations produced in three NaI(Tl) crystals doped with rubidium. The beta spectrum was measured down to 5 to 8 kev. An end point energy of 274 plus or minus 3 kev and a specific activity equal to 780 plus or minus l4 sec-⁻¹ per gram of natural rubidium were found. Assuming an isotopic abundance of 27.85% for Rb87, a half life of (5.53 plus or minus 0.l0) x lO¹⁰ yr is obtained. (auth)
