AN EVALUATION OF THE "ZIP" SYNTHESIS DEPLETION TECHNIQUE AS APPLIED TO A PWR SEED-BLANKET SLAB REACTOR

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4819863
S>The ZlP'' synthesis depletion technique is being employed as a design tool to determine the nuclear bchavior of PWR Core 2. A study of the applicability of the technique to seed blanket cores of the PWR type was undertaken by applying it to a fictitious, two-dimensional, seed-blanket, slab reactor specifically designed to provide a stringent test of the mathematical assumptions involved. A twodimensional depletion calculation for the slab reactor was assumed to represent reality for the purposes of the study and provided a basis for evaluating synthesis results. In general the synthesis technique was fairly successful in predicting the nuclear behavior of this fictitious core and lt was concluded that the use of the synthesis approximation as a PWR Core 2 design tool appears to be justified.
