Relative reaction rates in seed-blanket slab assemblies with hydrogen-to-thorium ratios of 0. 51, 1. 55, and 5. 1 (LWBR Development Program)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7010791

Lattice parameters were measured and calculated in ThO/sub 2/ blanket regions as a function of distance from seed regions in three one-dimensional seed-blanket slab cores. These cores contained ThO/sub 2/ blankets with H/Th atom ratios of 0.51, 1.55, and 5.1 to cover a wide range of blanket rod spacings of interest in power reactor design. The blanket regions were relatively narrow so that lattice parameter measurements were made in a nonasymptotic neutron spectrum. This situation is typical in seed-blanket power reactors where highly enriched seeds are separated by relatively narrow blanket regions. These experiments were performed to test the ability of the calculational model and the nuclear data to predict blanket parameters in an environment representative of a large seed-blanket reactor.
