A study of the swelling behavior of neutron irradiated metastable beta- phase uranium-base alloys was undertaken in an effort to determine whether such materials possessed the necessary volume stability of a potential fuel for power reactor applications. Materials irradiated were unalloyed uranium, U-0.3 wt% Cr, and U -0.3 wt% Cr -0.3 wt% Mo, with various metallurgical histories. Expected irradiation conditions were approximately 450 deg C central metal temperature, 0.01 and 0.3 at.% burnups of total uranium atoms, and a thermal neutron flux of l0/sup 13/cm/sup 2/sec. The experimental program is described, and the results available thus far are reported with a limited analysis of the data. (auth)
