FUNDAMENTAL AND APPLIED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN METALLURGY. Progress Report, November 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4808143
Preparation methods for refractory metal and alloy (Mo, W, and Hf --Mo) ingots, in preparation for studies of their high-temperature properties, are reported. The corrosion of zirconium-oxide-coated Zr and Zircaloy-2 by HCl is studied. The oxide film is deposited by heating the sanaple in O/sub 2/ or steam. The incorporation of small amounts of foreign ions (Nb, Si, Ti, Ta, and Al ions) into the oxide film, as exemplified by the reaction SiCl/sub 4/ + ZrO/sub 2/ -- SiO/sub 2/ + ZrCl/sub 4/, is accomplished. The relative irradiation-induced swelling.characteristics of alpha - and beta -phase U in the unalloyed state, in U--0.3 wt. r, and in U--0.3 wt.% Cr--0.3 wt.% Mo are analyzed. The preparation of Be single crystals by zone refining, and the analysis of the crystals thus formed, are discussed. (T.F.H.)
