THE GAMMA TO GAMMA PRIME TRANSFORMATION IN THE URANIUM-MOLYBDENUM SYSTEM

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4819018· OSTI ID:4819018
Electrical resistance measurements and metallography were employed in a study of the kinetics of the gamma to gamma prime transformation in the uranium- molybdenum system at l6 wt% molybdenum. A non-equilibrium phase, identified x- ray diffraction as alpha uranium, appeared early in the transformation anneal, reaching a maximum volume fraction at the time the gamma prime emerges. Subsequently, the alpha phase disappeared with time. The gamma matrix transformed to gamma prime faster as the transformation temperature was increased; at 550 deg C, the gamma prime phase first appeared between 48 and 72 hours, while at 500 deg C it first appeared after a l20 hour anneal.
