THE INFLUENCE OF RADIUM ON THE OCULAR TISSUES OF THE RABBIT. III. ITS INFLUENCE ON THE CORNEA (SUPPLEMENT: THE INFLUENCE ON THE SCLERA)

Journal Article · · Acta Soc. Ophthalmol. Japan
OSTI ID:4818930

Clinical observations made on a series of cases radiated with doses of 100--5500 mg hr. The first sign of corneal affection was the appearance of a diffuse or punctate superficial keratitis. When the dose reached 3400 mg hr, excoriation appeared and at 5500 mg hr, an ulcer appeared. Histologically, the epithelial and the endothelial layers showed irregular arrangement of cells with vacuolation, and swelling with deformation of the nucleus. In some instances the epithelial layer became thinned. Especially in cases with ulcer, deformation or disappearance of the basal-cells and irregular distribution of the lines delimiting them from the lamina propria were observed. (Abstr.
