Resistance against infection was distinctly reduced in mice after whole- body x irradiation of 500 to 600 r. However, when 2.5 mg of cysteine was administered intraperitoneallv 30 min prior to x irradiation and S. typhimurium was introduced into the body of mice perorally 3 days after the irradiation, the number of positive findings in the intestinal lymph nodes, liver, spleen, and peripheral blood decreased. It was concluded that cysteine is effective for countering diminution of anti-infectious capacity particularly when administered before x irradiation. (Abstr. Japan Med., 2: No. 6, June 1962)
