REPORT OF DRY RUNNING TWO 440-C HEAT-TREATED STAINLESS STEEL ANNULAR BALL BEARINGS IN A HELIUM ATMOSPHERE AT 510 F TEMPERATURE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4818824
The results of rotating a 440 deg C heat-treated air-melted stainless steel, full complement, annular ball bearing under 1l70 lbs radial loading at low speed in a helium atmosphere at a temperature of 5l0 deg F are given. The two test bearings were operated under load for 85,400 revoluthons in 358 hr at an average speed of 4 revolutions per minute. The tests were terminated when the shaft locked and the protective shear-pin drive coupling parted. Photographs of test equipment and the bearings after testing are given. The data are presented in tabular form. (M.C.G.)
