Rate studies of the oxidation of Pr/sub 6/O/sub 11/ to PrO/sub 2/ by oxygen gas at one atmosphere, in the temperature range 234 to 314 deg C, and the vacuum reduction of PrO/sub 2/ to Pr/sub 6/O/sub 11/ in the temperature range 242 to 347 deg C are reported. The kinetics of both processes are analyzed and with minor modifications would appear to fit the equation for a phase- boundarycontrolled mechanism quite accurately over most of the composition range involved. Stable phases in the rare earth oxide systems are also reported and discussed. The structural interrelations between A, B, and C type sesquioxides and fluorite dioxides are pointed out, and the structural relation between the sequence of intermediate phases, in the CeO/sub x/, PrC/sub x/, and TbO/sub x/ systems, and the sesquioxides and dioxides are considered. A parallel hypothetical homologous series of general formula M/sub n/O/sub 2n-1/ is suggested. (P.C.H.)
