THERMODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE REDUCTION OF URANIUM OXIDES AND OF URANYL FLUORIDES BY CETAIN REDUCING AGENTS (in Russian)

In view of the importance of UO/sub 2/, used directly for fabricating fuel elements and for preparing UF/sub 4/, thermodynamic calculations were carried out on the reduction of the higher U oxides and of uranyl fluoride by NH/ sub 3/, H/sub 2/, and CO. The isobaric-isothermal potential of the reduction reactions DELTA Z/sub T/ were calculated in the temperature range from 373 to 1173 deg K, using data given by V. G. Glasov and V. N. Shalaginov (Zhur. Priklad, Khim., 34: 20(1961) No. 1). Results indicate that UO3 is more easily reduced than U3OB. The DELTA Z/sub T/ potential of NH3/sub 3/ was found to be the highest among the reducing agents examined. The reducing ability of CO was found to decrease with increasing temperature, probably because of a shift in the 2CO + O/sub 2/ in equilibrium 2CO/sub 2/ reaction. UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ cannot be reduced by CO but both H/sub 2/ and NH/sub 3/ reduce it easily. (TTT)
