The use of transistors as high speed switches in avalanche mode circuits was reported previously, but the application of these circuits has been limited by the relatively low output powers available with the use of Ge transistors. The advent of Si mesa units, with their higher power and voltage ratings, has increased the capabilities of avalanche mode switching circuitry so that such circuits are now advantageous for high speed, high power pulse generating applicatrons. The important considerations for design of such circuits are described and explained in detail. (auth)
