A mass spectrometer is designed for use with gaseous samples, e.g., UF/ sub 6/. In the spectrometer, the pipe for introducing a gaseous sample has its sample discharge end formed of ceramic material and spaced from the ion source to minimize the memory effect. The orifice is larger than the pipe bore so that substantially all the sample passes through the orifice. (D.L.C.)
