Previous measurements indicated that in the fission of U/sup 235/ induced by 2.4-, 3.3- and 14.5-Mev monoenergetic neutrons, the delayed neutron yield remains unchanged up to 3.3 Mev and at 14.2 Mev it is increased by a factor of 2; similar observations were made with the even nuclei of U/sup 238/ and Th/ sup 232/. This made it of interest to study the delayed neutron yield of the fission of Pu/sup 239/ and Th/sup 232/ with 14.5-Mev neutrons, defining the delayed neutron yield as the ratio of delayed neutrons generated in 1 sec to the total number of fissions in the same period. The Cd-clad Pu or Th targets were exposed to a 14.5-Mev neutron flux from the T(d,n)He/sup 4/ reaction, using B counters in a paraffin block as detectors. The total yield was found to be 0.0130 plus or minus 0.0015 for Pu/sup 239/ and 0.075 plus or minus 0.007 for Th/sup 232/. The latter figure agrees well with previously published data. The Pu/sup 239/ yield is increased by a factor of 2 when the 14.5-Mev neutrons are used; this is attributed to the increased probability of neutron emission by a given nucleus. (TTT)
