Influence of blood transfusions on irradiated rats

Male and female adult Wistar rats weighsng 200 to 300 g were given whole-body x irradiation. From the 4th to 5th day to the 20th to 24th day, the animals were given a daily (not Sundays) intramuscular dose of antibiotics (20 mg streptomycin and 24000 units of penicillin per rat). Starting from the 6th to 9th day the rats were given, daily or every other day up to the l5fh to 20th day, an intravenous transfusion of 2 to 4 ml suspension of washed fresh rat blood cells in saline with a hematocrit of approximately 40%. After repeated transfusions unfavorable reactions were not observed in irradiated or unirradiated control animals. Repeated red blood cell counts showed that transfusions were effective since they maintained the number of erythrocytes at a high level. It was concluded that the administration of blood transfusions to rats treated with antibiotics considerably increased their survival-rate and time. It is also suggested that death of some of the rats at the time of post-irradiation bone marrow syndrome was due not only to bacteriemia and sepsis; further important factors (in some species) were severe anemia and ensuing tissue anoxia.
