A SIMPLIFIED AUTOMATIC PHOTOMETRIC TITRATOR APPLIED TO THE TITRATION OF MICROGRAM AMOUNTS OF SULFATE
A versatile photometric tltrator was developed based upon modifications to a Beckman Model B spectrophotometer. The cell compartment was modified to accommodate a slmplified titratlon assembly conslstlng of a motordrlven stlrrer, a reagent reservolr, and a syringe buret. A compact, gear-drlven buret mechanism is used to deliver the titrant to the cell at a controlled rate. An automatlc start-stop electrical circult is employed in the buret and recorder chart drlve for convenience of operation. In order to record light transmisslon values as linear displacements on the strlp chart, a llne-operated attenuator clrcult is used. The end polnt is detected from the lnflection polnt on the strip chart recording. The automatlc photometrlc tltrator was applled to the volumetrlc tltration of sulfate wlth barlum perchlorate uslng thorin as an indicator. Well deflned end points were found with 50 to 200 micrograms of sulfate ln the titration cell. The photometrlc titrator was found to overcome the llmitatlons of methods employing visual end polnts thereby making posslble the use of the volumetrlc method ln the microgram concentration level.
