INELASTIC $pi$$sup -$-NUCLEON INTERACTIONS AT 7 Gev WITH SMALL MULTIPLICITIES
BS>Interactions initiated by 7-Bev pi /sup -/ mesons are studied by emulsion and bubble chamber techniques. With appropriate criteria, 215 inelastic pion-nucleon interactions are selected in the emulsion and 178 in the propane bubble chamber. For events with small multiplicity it is found that for one- prong events, and for two-prong events with a secondary proton, most of the emitted pions have momenta in the cms greater than 0.6 Bev/c. Furthermore their angular distributions in the cms are strongly peaked in the forward direction. Assuming that only one pion is produced in the collisions it is found that only a negligible part of the interactions can proceed via the formation of a nucleon isobar. The kinematical data of the collisions with DELTA /sup 2/ < (2 5 m/sub pi )/sup 2/ are in agreement with those calculated for the process pi /sup -/ + N yields N + pi /sup *. The cross section for pi /up -/-proton interactions with formation of a pi pi / isobar is about 1.5 mb. (auth)
