Elastic and inelastic scattering angular distributions of 87-Mev positive pions on carbon and oxygen are measured with a total-absorption scintillation spectrometer of high energy resolution. The elastic angular- distribution data can be fitted with the Kisslinger theory. The inelastic angular distributions are strongly peaked in the backward direction. The inelastic differential cross section appreciably surpasses the elastic cross section at angles above about 100 deg . At several angles a peak is seen in the energy spectra of pions scattered from carbon, which must be explained as resulting from quasi-free pion-nucleon scattering.
