IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTORS
A gas-cooled reactor is designed with a multiple pumpdriven coolant circuit arranged so that, if one individual pump should fail, the reactor need not be shut down immediately and the pump can be replaced without interrupting the coolant flow. The circuit comprises a group of channels connected in series by connections between the inlet and outlet ducts, a plurality of coolant- circulating pumps, and a heat exchanger in each of the connections. The inlet ducts are joined by one ring main and the outlet ducts by another ring main, both ring mains having isolating valves or being of high impedance to gas flow. In operation, if one pump fails, the coolant flow continues at a level slightly below normal and the pump can be replaced when its associated isolating valves are closed, the coolant by-passing the faulty pump by means of the ring mains.
