The differential cross section for the elastic scattering of protons on O/sup 16/ was measured for the laboratory energy range of 4.25 to 8.6 Mev. A differentially pumped gas scattering chamber with a CsI(Tl) scintillation detector was used. Measurements were made at the following center of mass scattering angles: 30 deg 2 , 54 deg 25 , 90 deg 0 , 103 deg 48', 122 deg 57', 140 deg 5 , 148 deg 50', 166 deg 52 . Measurements were made at 0.0025 to 0.001 Mev intervals with a target thickness of 0.0025 to 0.001 Mev at 166 deg 52'. The other angles were measured at 0.001 to 0.040 Mev intervals with a 0.0011 to 0.0033 Mev target. The energy spread of the beam was less than 0.003 Mev for all the work. The measurements up to 7.6 Mev, plus earlier additional data in the range of 2.0 to 4.25 Mev, were used for a phase shift analysis. The cross section data were fitted to a partial wave phase shift expansion by a least squares method using an IBM 704. The level parameters were obtained by application of dispersion formalism to the extracted phase shifts. The two level approximation was used where appropriate. The analysis covers the range 2.0 to 7.6 Mev, except for 4 levels which were too narrow to be resolved. The parameters for each level are listed below; (the parameters are in the following order: lab. energy in Mev, angular momentum and parity, and ratio of experimental to Wigner limit on reduced width) 4.354 approximate resonant energy and laboratory width for the levels above 7.6 Mev which are listed next are only estimated: 7.700, 0.100; 7.875, 0.030; 7.940, 0.030; 8.275, first gives a description of the IBM programs written for this work and a complete fortran listing of the programs. The second gives two illustrations of branching solutions in the phase shift analysis.
