THE SCATTERING OF PROTONS BY OXYGEN

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4749676
Elastic and inelastic differential cross-section measurements were made for the scattering of protons by oxygen. A differentially pumped gas target was employed. An elastic-scattering survey was conducted from 8.5 to 13.6 Mev laboratory proton energy at a center-of-mass angle of 166 deg 52' with 2.5 kev steps and a 2.5 kev target. Excitation curves for the elastic scattering were then taken at seven other center-of-mass angles with energy steps ranging from 5 kev to 25 kev. Detailed angular distributions of the elastic scattering were taken at laboratory proton energies from approximates 5 to 13 Mev. Inelastic scattering data were taken at laboratory angles of 166 deg 00' and 86 deg 24'. At the 166 deg angle, data were taken from 10.45 to 12.98 Mev with energy steps and target thicknesses identical with the elastic scattering survey at the center- of-mass angle of 166 deg 52'. At 86 deg 24', the final group (consisting of protons when the residual nucleus was left in its first or second excited state) was studied from 8.5 to 11.3 Mev, while the second group (consisting of protons when the residual nucleus was left in its third or fourth excited state) was studied from 9.7 to 11.3 Mev. The positions and widths of several levels in F/ sup 17/ were obtained from these data. Two levels, at 12.671 and 13.215 Mev, were of particular interest because of their small total widths (<5 kev). An optical model analysis of the elastic angular distributions was performed, and the optical model parameters are presented. (M.P.G.)
