THERMAL NEUTRON CROSS SECTIONS AND RESONANCE INTEGRALS OF THE REACTIONS O$sup 17$(n,$alpha$$C$$sup 14$, Ar$sup 36$(n,$alpha$)S$sup 33$, AND N$sup 14$ (n,p,)C*SUP $sup 1$$sup 4$

The thermal neutron cross sections of the exothermic reactions O/sup 17/ ,(n, alpha )C/sup 14/, Ar/sup 36/(n, alpha )S/sup 33/ and N/sup 14/(n,p)C/sup 14/ were measured, relative to the activation cross section of gold, by using a pulse ionization chamber technique. The results obtained are 0.235 plus or minus 0.005 barn, 5.52 plus or minus 0.ll millibarns, and l.83 plus or minus 0.03 barns respectively. All the reactions were shown to have the same cadmium ratio as the B/sup 10/(n, alpha )Li/sup 7/ reaction with accuracies of plus or minus 10%, plus or minus 40%, and plus or minus 3% respectively. The O/sup 17/ result shows that capture in this nuclide contributes significantly to neutron absorption in heavy water. (auth)
