PRODUCTION OF POLARIZED PROTONS FROM A BEAM OF ATOMIC HYDROGEN BY QUADRUPOLE WEAK FIELD SEPARATION OF ONE HYPERFINE COMPONENT

BS>An apparatus is described in which atomic H is produced in a Wood's discharge, and is emitted through a de Laval nozzle in order to achieve high intensity. The H beam is polarized by being passed through the field of a 4-pole magnet having a field gradient that varies uniformly from 40 to l5 kG/cm from the entrance to the exit. The polarized beam is then ionized to protons and accelerated. (T.F.H.)
