PRODUCTION OF POLARIZED PROTONS FROM A BEAM OF ATOMIC HYDROGEN BY QUADRUPOLE STRONG-TO-WEAK FIELD SEPARATION OF ONE HYPERFINE COMPONENT

Journal Article · · Helv. Phys. Acta, Suppl.

The design of a polarized proton source for a 600-Mev synchrocyclotron (SC) is described. H is dissociated and ejected as a beam of atomic H through a de Laval nozzle into the central region of the SC. The beam then passes through a 1.4-m-long permanent quadrupole magnet, whose poles are shaped such that the field decreases uniformly from 3400 to 170 gauss in order to separate the 4 major hyperfine components. The desired hyperfine component is then ionized by electron bombardment and accelerated. (T.F.H.)
