A neutral rare earth solution (pH = 5) containing 20 and 40 g/l rare earths (4 grams total) as nitrates was mechanically stirred 2, 5 and 7 hours with 40 to 70 ml of anion exchanger in the hydroxyl form. The nitrate anion releases hydroxyl anion from the resin which preciputates the rare earths selectively according to basicity. Pr and Nd precipitate first, while La remains in solution. A 70% yield of La having a purtty of 98 to 98.5% can be obtained from a rare earth mixture containing 65 to 70% lanthanum oxide. An increase in temperature has an unfavorable effect on the separation. A volume of 800 ml of anion exchanger was contacted with six successive portions each contatning 70 grams of mixed rare earth oxides (about 30% Pr + Nd), and agitated for five hours each time at room temperature. The results showed that the separation of La from Nd and Pr was excellent. lt is believed that the formation of a basic rare earth precipitate around the kernels of the anion exchanger slowed down the diffusion of hydroxyl ions into the solution and resulted in a cleaner separation.
