RADIATION RESPONSE IN PATIENTS WITH CERVICAL CANCER

The effect of ionizing radiation on the morphology of vaginal squamous epithelial cells was studied in 136 cases of cervical carcinoma. The cells in vaginal smears were examined for size, vacuolation of cytoplasm, and number of nuclei; radiation response was considered good if such changes were found in 70% or more of the cells. In patients below the age of 45, 16% fewer good radiation responses were found than in patients over 45 years of age. Responses were more often good (48%) in patients with grade I carcinomas than in those with more malignant tumors. Follow up studies 1.5 to 5 years after irradiation showed a lower mortality rate (14%) for patients with good radiation responses than those with poor responses (26%). None of the patients with grades I and II carcinomas died after good cytological reactions, whereas 15% of those with poor reactions died. Although some correlation was found between cytological radiation response and prognosis, a good response did not invariably accompany elimination of cancer. (H.H.D.)
