HIGH-TEMPERATURE OXIDATION OF SOME ALLOYS OF TITANIUM AND TANTALUM WITH ZIRCONIUM (in Russian)

The little-known corrosion-resisting properties of Ti-- Zr and Ta- Zr alloys were investigated by following the oxidation of the alloys using a continuous weighing method. The Ti-- Zr system consists of a continuous series of solid solutions while Ta forms eutectic type limited-solubility alloys with Zr. Ti alloys containing 30, 70, and 90% Zr and Ta alloys with 10, 30, and 70% Zr were used for the tests. Thermodynamic calculations indicate that between 500 and 900 deg C the higher Ti oxides are reduced to lower oxides by Zr, yielding primarily TiO. ln the Ta-- Zr system the alloys containing small amounts of Zr are only slightly oxidized in view of the formation of a protective oxide film. At higher Zr concentrations the alloys are more heavily attacked, probably because of stresses formed in the protective layer. As a general rule it is concluded that alloying of Ti and Ta with Zr leads to a marked decrease of the high-temperature oxidation resistance of these alloys, especially at temperatures beyond 600 deg C.
