EFFECT OF CONTINUOUS LOW-DOSE GAMMA IRRADIATION ON HEALING OF STANDARDIZED WOUNDS IN THE ALBINO RAT

Journal Article · · Texas Repts. Biol. and Med.
OSTI ID:4816786
Rats were subjected to prenatal and postnatal total-body continuous radiation at 10 and 20 r/23-hr day from a Co/sup 60/ source until they were 16 weeks of age. Male rats were used for studies of the infiuence of life-time chronic irradiation on the tensile strength of wounds, and female rats were employed in the experiment involving burn healing. When the rats were 16 weeks of age, incisions were made on half of the animals, and burns were administered to the others. The incisions were 8mm in length and were made next to the dorsal midline; the burns were administered on an area about 12 x 45 mm in water at 98 deg . Neither the wounds nor the burns showed a decrease in tensile strength or healing attributable to exposure to chronic irradiation. There were no significant differences seen in repair time between irradiated animals and controls. (H.H.D.)
