IMPROVED PHOSPHORYLATED CELLULOSE AND METHOD OF OBTAINING IT

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4816749

A method is outlined for obtaining a phosphorylated cellulose suitable for adsorption of thorium from acidic aqueous solutions containing phosphoric acid. In this method, cellulose is treated with phosphoric acid containing an excess of a basic nitrogen compound, e.g., urea, for a curing time sufficient to combine all the phosphorus with the cellulose. The phosphorylated cellulose in salt form is converted into hydrogen form by acid treatment, washed with water to remove the acid, and allowed to stand in contact with water in order to improve its adsorbent properties.
