ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF RUTHENIUM-103, RUTHENIUM-106, CAESIUM-137, ZIRCONIUM/NIOBIUM-95 AND CERIUM-144 IN SHORE SAND AND SEA SILT SAMPLES

Ru/sup 103/, Ru/Rh/sup 106/, Cs/sup 137/, Zr/Nb/sup 95/, and Ce/sup 144/ in s amples of shore sand and sea silt are estimated by a gamma -spectrometric method. The presence of two other gamma -emitting isotopes, K/sulp 40/ and I/ sup 131/, is normally assumed and they can also be determined. Ce/sukp 144/ is also present, but does not affect the method since the 0.14 Mev photopeak is not used to detect Ce . The contribution of each radionuclide to the gamma -ray spectrum is determined by means of simultaneous equations derived from data obtained by scanning the pure radioisotopes under the same conditions of geometry and over the same energy range.
