EXTRACTIVE DETERMINATION OF STRONTIUM-90 AND CERIUM-144 IN SAMPLES (in Russian)
The standard radiochemical methods used for the quantitative determination of Sr/sip 90/ and Ce/sup 144/ in soil, silt, and ash samples require 12 precipitation steps to separate these isotopes from the other radioactive materials. A method was developed to separate these elements from a mixture of long-lived isotopes that requires a much shorter time than any of the previously employed ones; it is based on the joint extraction of the Y/sup 90/ in equilibrium and of Ce/sup 141/(IV) from the solution obtained by dissolving the samples with 6N HNO/sub 3/, after removing the organic components by calcination at 400 un. Concent 85% C and adding up to 6M NH/sub 4/NO/sub 3/ to the solution. The extraction is carried out with tributylphosphate at a phase ratio of 1: 1 within less than 5 min. Sr/sup 90/, Cs/sup 137/, and Ru/sup 106/ are not coextracted with the Y and thus do not interfere with the analysis. The Pm/sup 147/ isotope is taken up in the TBP phase but its low-energy BETA -particles were not recorded on the counter used in the determination. The precision of the method is comparable to that of the usual radiochemical analysis although it requires only 2 1/2 hours. The Ce/sup 144/ can be determined subsequently in the same sample. (TTT)
