PROGRESS IN RADIATION PRESERVATION OF FOODS. REPORT OF CONTRACTORS' MEETING

A meeting of contractors in the Quartermaster Radiation Preservation of Foods Project was held in Chicago on June 6 to 8, 1961. The objectives of the project and developments to date were reviewed and future plans were discussed. Research facilities and programs related to the radiation preservation of food in Great Britain and France were outlined. Summaries are included of papers presented at technical sessions covering the biochemistry of sensory changes in meat products, container technology, radiation dosimetry and dose distribution, microbiology of food spoilage organisms, radiation effects on food texture, color, flavor, wholesomeness, and nutritional properties, and the results of feeding irradiated foods to animals and human volunteers.
