LET'S BE REALISTIC ABOUT FUEL REPROCESSING COSTS

Journal Article · · Nucleonics (U.S.) Ceased publication
OSTI ID:4816509
Results are presented from cost studies of reprocessing plant operations. The studies consider several types of reprocessing plant concepts on three different scales of operation and for the fuel types of four different reactors (Yankee, Dresden, Consolidated Edison, and Enrico Fermi). The results are compared with AEC charges and it is shown that the AEC reprocessing costs are anywhere from 0.5 mill/kwh up to several mills per kilowatt-hour higher when added to the power costs for these reactors. The AEC did not include the fuel reprocessing costs in computing the costs of nuclear power. Recommendations are given for lowering fuel reprocessing costs. (N.W.R.)
