CORROSION OF ALLOY STEELS IN CARBON DIOXIDE

The corrosion of 1% Cr, 1/2% Mo and 2 1/4% Cr, 1% Mo steels in carbon dioxide was measured within the temperature range 450 to 500 deg C and the pressure range 0 to 15 atmospheres. The effects of gas velocity, surface preparation, and water content of the gas were also determined. Some results of a 12% Cr, 1% Ni steel are included within the temperature range 600 to 725 deg C. Under semi-static conditions both low alloy steels formed adherent oxide scales of the Fe/sub 3/O/sub 4/-- Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ type together with an uniden tified spinel. The weight gains obtained were dependent on temperature and varied little with gas pressure, water content of gas, or surface treatment of the metal. A cubic relationship was found to best fit the weight gain-time results, and weight gains varied from 1.7 mg/cm/sup 2/ to a maximum of 5.2 mg/cm/sup 2/ after 1000 hours exposure wlthin the temperature range investigated. The 12% steel had a weight gain range of 0.05 to 0.47 mg/cm/sup 2/ after 1000 hours at the higher temperatures. Some scaling occurred in high velocity gas, the intent being much greater for the 1% Cr, 1/2% Mo steel. Weight gains varied from 0.7 mg/cm/sup 2/ at 450 deg C to 2.5 mg/ cm/sup 2/ a 525 deg C after 100 hours at a velocity of 100 ft/sec. It was observed that the relative thickness of the Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ scale was much greater under flowing gas than under semi-static conditions. (auth)
