STUDIES IN THE MgUO$sub 3$-MgUO$sub 4$ SYSTEM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4815211
Magnesium uranate was prepared by standard solid-state synthetlc techniques and decomposition pressures were measured between 1800 and 2500 deg F. At oxygen contents less than MgUO/sub 3.5/ a solid solution of fluorite structure is found. Above MgUO/sub 3.75/ the orthorhombic magnesium uranate phase is observed. The two phases are in equilibrium in air at 2300 deg F. The heat of solution of O/sub 2/ in the fluorite phase is 45 kilocalories mole-i and the heat of the reaction MgUO/sub 3.5 plus or minus /+ 0.120/sub 2/ MgU/sub 3.75/ is 83.3 kilocalories mole/sup (O/sub 2/).
