SPECTRA OF DIVALENT RARE EARTH IONS IN CRYSTALS OF ALKALINE EARTH FLUORIDES. I. SAMARIUM

Journal Article · · Optics and Spectroscopy (USSR) (English Translation)
OSTI ID:4815137
The absorption and luminescence spectra of divalent samarium ions introduced into single crystals of Ca, Sr, and Ba fluorides are investigated at 293, 77, and 4.2 deg K. The absorption spectra are found to be similar, but an essential difference is found in the luminescence spectra when the host crystals are different. The surmise is made that the absorption spectra of all crystals investigated and the emission spectra of CaF/sub 2/: Sm/sup 2+/ are determined by transitions of electrons from the 4f shell into outer shells (5d, 6s, etc.). ln the luminescence spectra of SrF/sub 2/: Sm/sup 2+/ and BaF/sub 2/: Sm/sup 2+/ the excited term (/sup 5/D/sub o/) of the 4f shell, w hich in these crystals is located below the terms of the outer shell, is observed.
