gamma -ray induced polymerization of isoprene was investigated in the temperature range from --78 deg C to 40 deg C. The effects of additives, temperature, and dose rate on the polymerization rate were studied in this temperature range. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl strongly retarded polymerization at high temperatures, while pyridine retarded it at low temperatures. A linear relationship could not be observed in Arrhenius' plot of the polymerization rate. The over-all polymerization rate was separated into radical and ionic contributions. The structure of the polyisoprene obtained at -- 78 deg C was similar to that of the polyisoprene obtained by cationic catalysis. The radiationinduced polymerization of isoprene was predominantly a radical one. At intermediate temperatures, both the cationic and radical mechanisms were operative concurrently. (OID)
